Although we usually think of serotonin in the context of treating depression, actually serotonin plays an important role in neurological health including that of motor neurons. Although the primary purpose of taking 5-HTP as a therapeutic in ALS is to retard neurodegeneration, some patients may also experience symptomatic benefit due to its antidepressant effect. Such symptomatic benefit, if it occurs, will usually be noticeable within a couple days, 5-HTP is quick-acting unlike many antidepressants which take a couple weeks to kick in.
